Mark the Time

One in three Americans has a criminal record, restricting their ability to get housing, education, and a job. Just before state legislators voted on a bill that would seal criminal records and help millions, we unveiled a powerful mural hand-painted by formerly incarcerated activist Zaki Smith that leveraged a medium typically used by inmates—hash marks. Instead of representing time suffered in prison, we recontextualized the marks to illustrate the injustice he has suffered after getting released, proving that life on the outside is often even more punishing than life on the inside.

A criminal record shouldn’t be a life sentence.
